Ionospheric Event 2015-02-23

SUMMARY OF THE EVENT: The ionosphere was disturbed during the daylight of the 23/02/2015 with TEC increase of +60% wrt to the median of the 15 previous days. Small disturbances (+50% TEC) also occurred in the north during the night. As a consequence, the next day 24/02/2015, the TEC was lessened. These disturbances can be linked with the geomagnetic activity which reached active levels (K at Dourbes = 4, with Kp reaching 5) due to the fast solar wind from a coronal hole (source: SIDC).

Figure 1 shows the time evolution of the Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) (in red) extracted from the near-real time VTEC maps at 3 different latitudes (Figure 2): a) Northern part (top), b) Brussels (middle) and c) Southern part (bottom). Also shown, the model based on the median from the 15 previous days (in grey).
